The Brown County Republican Lincoln and Reagan Dinner was held Friday, February 17 and Speaking at the event was Republican Presidential Candidate Rick Santorum. The event was held at the Georgetown Elementary School where the gym was packed from wall to wall. Santorum had just finished speaking in Warren County earlier in the evening.
Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine (R) spoke to supports with his wife Fran at his side right before Santorum came to the stage with his son Josh. DeWine, announced earlier in the day that he was supporting Santorum for President.
Other speakers for the evening were State Representative Danny Bubp, State Senator Tom Neihaus, US Representative Jean Schmidt and leaders of Brown County. Paul Hall was the evening emcee.
Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine (R), announced last week that he had joined with 11 fellow attorneys general from Nebraska, Texas, South Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Maine, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oklahoma and Colorado. The 12 State Attorney Generals sent a letter to Secretaries Sebelius, Geithner and Solis regarding the Obama administration mandate to require religious employers that provide health insurance coverage for employees to cover contraception and related services.
The letter was to express their strong opposition to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ mandate requiring religious employers that provide health insurance coverage to their employers to include coverage for contraceptives, sterilization and related services. Should this unconstitutional mandate be promulgated, the attorney generals are prepared to vigorously oppose it in court.
The proposed regulations would compel religious affiliated organizations, hospitals, universities and social service entities to subsidize contraceptive products and services which clearly violate their religious beliefs. We are deeply troubled by the unprecedented coercion of organizations and individuals to act contrary to their religious beliefs The only viable alternative for these employers is to penalize their employers by ceasing the provision of health insurance altogether. The choice for such organizations essentially becomes: provide and subsidize activity in contravention with core religious beliefs, eliminate employer-provided health coverage, or withdraw from public ministry.
